Mass Aqua Aerobic Session on 27 Apr 2014

I think this might be the very ever first mass aqua aerobics session held in Singapore. My aqua aerobic instructor will be one of the many instructors. It is targeting 500 people, so that it can be in Singapore Book of Records. Come and join us for half an hour of fun. Event is free and all are welcome.

Venue - Sengkang Swimming Complex (Teaching Pool-1.2m depth)
Date - 27 April 2014
Time - 11am

Majority of Singaporean still think that this exercise is only for old ladies. It is suitable and good for all ages. Just that most of the classes are filled with elderly, so the younger ones thought it is an exercise for the elderly. I hope the younger ones will realise that it is a good form of exercises and give it a try.

You may be interested to find out more about my instructor, Vikki and updates of her classes. Check it out at her Facebook page Vik's Fitness

Development of Aqua Aerobics in SG

I found that over the year aqua aerobics begin to find its way to the people living in Singapore. People are more aware of the existence of such exercise. For the first time, my class has intake of 2 males and they are joining us for another season. Naturally I thought of writing another post to continue where I stopped in my first aqua aerobics post on where to learn aqua aerobics

Just like pilates, instructors are coming out with variations for aqua aerobics to make more money. I am still the die-hard fan for origin of the exercise both for pilates and aqua aerobics. I think it is the same for my aqua instructor, who believes in proper workout of body parts rather than all the fancy trendy stuff. My aqua instructor keeps a low profile, so you can hardly google her on the website, yet she has a pool of faithful students. Some are with her for more than 10 years already. She teaches both public and private (specially needs children). She was actually interviewed by some media, but I couldn't find them on the web. Only manage to find a short section about Ms Vikki Jonied at Run Society Website.

There are new trendy aqua classes available in the market of Singapore
  • Aqua Aerobics (origin or traditional aqua workout)
  • Deep Water Workout
  • Aqua Spin (latest in thing)
  • Aqua Pilates (pilates workout in water, errh wonder whether student can take the cold without warming up the body)
  • Aquarobics (actual land aerobics into water, different from original aqua workout)

Deep Water Workout
The difference between Deep Water Workout (DWW) and Aqua Aerobics is that DWW doesn't touch the floor of the pool at all. You would need to wear the float belt to keep you afloat all the time. The workouts are difference from Aqua Aerobics and hence also workout different parts of the muscles. The main advantage of DWW is that it allows athletes to carry out high-intensity workouts without causing undue stress on their muscles and joints. It is recommended for patients with arthritis, asthma, obesity and other chronic ailments.

Aquarobics
The term is interchangeable with Aqua Aerobics but don't mix them up. As Aqua Aerobics get popular, aerobics instructors got interested and take up trainer course to become aqua instructor. At the back of their minds, they want to integrate their area of expertise on land aerobics directly into the water, to come up with a new variations for aqua. In simple term is basically take the exact aerobics on land into the water. But the danger is that they overlook the difference between land and water. Hence the workout cannot be exactly the same. Any side effect, I have no idea, as it really depends on whether the instructor is doing it for the good of the health/fitness or for $$$.

Aqua Pilates
It is the similar concept as aqua aerobics.

Aqua Spin
It uses stationary bicycles specially made to be submerged in water, where participants can pedal using the water resistance in order to exercise. Aquatic Spinning is a revolutionary way of exercising which combines the benefits of water swimming/aqua aerobics and cycling.

Aqua Aerobics - Jogging with Noodle

Jogging with a noodle may sound like a silly exercise, but it is great for a water aerobics routine. When one pushes the "noodle" away from the body and towards the body, one is working on the triceps, biceps and the back muscle.

Aqua Aerobics - Ab Exercises

Strengthen your core muscles with water aerobics ab exercises. Don't you like this abs workout, relaxing with the "noodle", yet working the abs to have a nice flat tummy. Surely ladies will like this workout in the water.

Aqua Aerobics - Hamstring Curls

Need to exercise your legs? Try water aerobics hamstring curls. Seems rather effortless on land isn't it? Promise you it isn't once one is in the water trying to bring the "noodle" down. The "noodle" floats and one is trying to go against the flow, by trying to press it down.

Aqua Aerobics - Line Jumping

It is not easy to keep your balance in water with this jumping exercise. It was tough for my first try due to the water buoyancy.

In class, we have a variation to this jumping exercise. The "noodle" is treated as a skipping rope and we have to jump over it. You can jump over it with feet landing on the pool floor, or jumping over it and back off the floor. It took me awhile to master the skipping skill off the floor.

Aqua Aerobics - Side Abs Workout

Side Ab Exercises in water can strengthen your core muscles. Beside the exercise in the video, you can try another variation, by keeping your body in upright position, bend your knees 90 degree, twist to the right and left. The ideal waistline is achievable? Nothing is true until you try it out yourself and see the result.

Aqua Aerobics - Flexed Foot

Another clip by expertvillage on how to do straight leg flexed foot exercise for water aerobics.

Aqua Aerobics - Cycling

Don't you think it looks very easy? It isn't difficult, one just need to maintain the correct posture by seating upright, to get the best workout out from the simple exercise in the water. Bending the body forward will make one move in the water faster, but will miss out working on some muscles group.

Aqua Aerobics - Water Marching

Looks rather similar to water running or jogging. Enjoy the clip from expertvillage.

Aqua Aerobics - Jumping Jack

Jumping jack may be easy on land, but in water, you would need to work again water resistance. In short, double the effort you have to do it on land. Give it a try and you will realise that it isn't as easy as it seems.

In this video, this exercise is done without the "noodle" (long cylinder float). When include "noodle" for working the arm in this exercise, one will face greater water resistance.

Aqua Aerobics - Arm and Core Workout

May be I should get my instructor to do such clip too, explaining the purpose of each moments. A clip speaks clearer than a thousand of words. Some movements that we did could be found in YouTube and hereby sharing with those who like to know more before signing up for an aqua aerobics class. The clip did not jump straight to the movement, rather it explains each part of the movement first before showing the complete movement which is moving your arm and bringing your knee to your chest.

Aqua Aerobics - Core Breathing Techniques

If you want to do a proper work out in aqua aerobics, you should not neglect the core breathing techiniques. Very often we will forget to breath properly while trying to cope with the exercises. As for me, I will integrate the breathing techniques from pilates while doing aqua aerobics, it helps improve breathing and strengthen the core muscle.

You breathe in deep through the nose, expanding your lungs. Then you breathe out through your mouth. You keep your stomach draw to the back at all times while breathing in and out.

Aqua Aerobics - Water Running or Jogging

For all exercises, you would need proper warm up first. Water running is the first exercise we will start off to get our bodies warm up. You will need to start slow, picking up the momentum gradually. Once you get the momentum, you do this for at least a lap before moving to the next exercise. If it is your first time doing aqua aerobics, you will find it a bit tough. Simply because you are not use to the water resistance which you will not encounter on ground.

There is a variation for water running. Running off the floor, is where you do the running without your feet touching the floor of the pool. In order to do so, you would need your abdominal muscle to keep you afloat and lifting the feet off the floor. This will work and strengthen your core muscle.

Where to Learn Aqua Aerobics

I am quite surprise that it is difficult to find a site that will give me a list of where I can attend aqua aerobics lessons in Singapore. The search results are just some kind of write-ups or online articles. Hence I have come up with a list of my own, so that those who do consider taking this low impact yet effective exercise have a list for consider.

These places hold continuous lessons throughout the years, unlike private instructor that requires a certain number of students and availability of venue before a class can be formed. Do enquire from the following providers for details on the course and check whether the providers are providing aqua aerobics in shallow water or deep water. The four providers have various club houses and centers, providing classes at various days and time to suit the needs of the members and public.

Since I used to be a member of Civil Service Club, naturally I am attending the class at Civil Service Club conducted by Ms Vikki. I have not attended others before, so it is for you to try and find it out for yourself which instructor do you prefer.
