Hand, foot and mouth disease - cause, symptom, treatment

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is caused by Coxsackie virus and Enterovirus 71. Although this mild illness will heal in 5-7 days, it cannot be taken lightly as it can give rise to serious complication. HFMD is spread by direct contact with the nasal discharge, saliva, faeces and fluid from the rash of an infected person. Both adults and children can be affected, particularly young children below 5 years old.

Signs & Symptoms
  • fever
  • sore throat
  • ulcers in throat, mouth and tongue
  • headache
  • rash with vesicales (small blisters 3-7mm) on hands, feet and diaper area
  • loss of appetite
  • vomiting and/or diarrhoea
Treatment

There is no specific treatment for the infection other than symptomatic relief of symptoms. Symptomatic treatment is given to provide relief from fever, aches and pain. Ease your child’s discomfort and help your child recover:
  •  Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids
  • Change to a soft diet (e.g. porridge, pureed fruit) if the mouth ulcers are a problem
  • Give medications as prescribed by the doctor
  • Ensure your child gets plenty of rest by keeping him/her at home

For more information on HFMD, please visit Health Promotion Board website.

Multi-wear Headscarf

I was introduced to this by outward bound instructors during the course of preparation to go into Japan for crisis relief trip under minus zero degree condition. We were taught what were the proper warm clothing for such cold weather. Indeed it is a very handy item to bring for travel. It can be used as a mask if you do not have a mask with you. It serves as a neckscarf to keep a person warm by trapping the hot air around your neck in the cold weather. It can become a beanie to keep your head warm from the cold too. It can range from SGD10 to SGD80 depending on the material. There are 12 ways to wear the headscarf.

Nescafe Instant Latte

I am a coffee drinker. I do go for instant coffee though I prefer on the spot grinded and brew coffee. I will try out the different types of instant coffee that supermarkets are selling. Recently, my sister had bought some instant Nescafe latte from Perth. You can't find these 3 favours in Singapore. So which is my pick?

Greenblend Latte
My pick is Greenblend Latte. The packaging indicates that it is 70% more antioxidants than green tea. Is it true? I have no idea. I didn't go for this because it contains more antioxidants. This doesn't taste too sweet and lesser milk content. Hence it suits me best.

Irish Cream Latte
This is my second choice. Taste more Irish as the packaging indicated. I don't go for sweet and creamy stuff, so naturally this take up the second place.

Hazelnut Latte
This favour is too sweet for me, so it is ranked third. Of course, the ranking will depend on the taste-bud and preference of individuals. A friend of mine simply love Hazelnut favour.

Hope that you have a chance to try them!

Know your purpose on earth

Do you know that by knowing your purpose on earth, there is practical benefits? Knowing your purpose in life will:-
  1. Simplify your life

  2. Focus your energy

  3. Reduce your stress

  4. Give your life meaning

  5. Prepare you for eternity
Once you discover your purpose, you will channel all your effort and energy on what is important to fulfil your purpose. You will be able to make sound decision as to what to do and what not to do. You become effective by being selective. At every accomplishment of it, you feel that your spirit is lifted up and great fulfilment. You will realise that you no longer go around in circles, ending up asking what is life all about again. My wish is that readers will be able to discover their purposes and no longer declare "sian" (bored) about their lives.

"Without purpose, life has no meaning.
Without meaning, life has no significance or hope."
Quote from Rick Warren

What drives your life?

Our lives are driven by something. Have you ever give a good thought about what drives your life? You may be driven by pressure from peers, fear of losing a job, ridiculous deadline or family problem. There are many circumstances, values or emotions that can drive your life.

Many people are driven by these five common ones:-

1) Guilt

Although what we are today is a result of our past, but we don't have to be prisoners of our past. So don't let memories of guilt manipulate your lives.

2) Resentment

Many people hold on to their hurts and never get over them by rehearsing the hurts over and over again. Those who have hurt you, probably have forgotten and go on with their lives. Yet you continue to hurt yourselves with your bitterness. Let go of the resentment and be fair to yourselves.

3) Fear

Fear can be caused by many factors. Whatever the cause, it resulted us missing out great opportunities in our path. Simply because we are afraid to venture out and prefer status quo. So don't create a self-imposed prison on yourselves and prevent youreselves from realising your potential.

4) Materialism

Self-worth and net-worth are not the same. Your value is not determined by your valuables. Don't be blinded by the world's norm that more will make you more happy, more important or more secure. At a certain stage of your life, you will be wondering what is the purpose of pursuing more. So pursue something worth pursuing in life.

5) Need for approval

One of the key to failure is trying to please everyone. Don't allow the expecations of others such as parents, spouses, children, friends etc control your life. Don't misunderstand me here. I'm not asking you to do whatever you want without giving a thought to others. Hence give your best for all things and free yourself from the endless strive of earning approval.

Whatever the driving factors are, they all lead to the same dead end: unused potential, unneccessary stress and an unfulfilled life. I believed that many of you have asked "Why am I in this world for? What is my purpose in this life?" Instead of the many driving factors, you only need one driving factor - PURPOSE ON EARTH. Unless you find your purpose on earth, otherwise you will continue to have an unfulfilled life.

Fulfilled Life = Knowing Your Purpose On Earth

Manatuto District, Timor Leste

On our way back to Dili, we stopped by this resturant in Manatuto District. Cock & Bull is one of our favourite place for lunch. Nice cool place to have a meal under the humid weather of Timor Leste. If the missionaries from another church (who stationed in Manatuto District) happened to be at home, we do ask them to join us for lunch. A time to update one another on the wonderful works that were done in Timor Leste. Much thanks to them for allowing us to use their home toilet for our toilet break every time we travelled into Viqueque District.

The black stuff doesn't look appealing. But you must taste this dish of beef. It is the local signature dish and taste delicious. I must find out how the locals cook the sauce. The dish of noodles is not to replace rice. It is considered as one of the dish. The electricity is quite regular in districts nearer to Dili, so you can still get chilled coke at this place.

Updates @ 12.05.2012
No longer can get good food for the same price we used to pay.

If you are a beginner and think that you couldn't catch-up with the steps. This one is pretty easy, although it is for beginner to intermediate. Sometime it is good to be able to complete a simple one, leaving you with satisfaction rather than disappointment. So enjoy!

Local Home, Viqueque District, Timor Leste

The intepreter had invited us to visit his home. I didn't manage to find out where his home town is. It was full of danger to reach his home, with damaged bridge, up very narrow and steep rocky hill. You need very skilful driver to drive the car.

Have you ever drink coconut water, where the coconut is plucked right before your eyes? Well, we had ours at the interpreter's house. You can see how he climbed up the coconut tree with bare hands and feet in the clip below. Freshest coconut drink I ever had in life.

Revamp of Blog Site!

Halo World!

My blog is entering into the third month since its birth. I am starting to enjoy blogging and learning to apply some simple basic html & CSS codes that I learnt from online guides. I am not an IT trained person, hence to be able to do so is wonderful. I love designing my blog site. It gaves me a sense of achievement seeing the finished work under my creative fingers.

Welcome to the new look on my blog!
Hope you like this new clean look!

Please don't let me know if you don't like the revamp blog site. We just have different liking.

Luca Sub-district, Viqueque District, Timor Leste

Luca is not a village that was adopted by our church. Due to the raining season, we were not able to get into Bibileo. The road conditions did not permit us to get anywhere near to Bibileo. Instead we went to Luca and chat with the village head whether we could bless the villagers by setting up the medical mobile clinic. They were willing to receive us, as such we gave some medical attention to the villagers.
